ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Artist’s statement
Site 1-2-3 Montefiore Medical Center
My mission is to promote health and wellbeing through art practice, responding to the context, values, and needs of the commissioning institution. Working in architectural spaces that are functional, familiar and routine, I seek to enrich the experiences and consciousness of individuals and the public through interventions that reconceptualize the chosen locations as opportunities for greater personal and cultural awareness.
For the Montefiore Medical Center, I conceived a synergic art-science relation through the healing presence of art. I particularly responded to the potentiality of transition sites: corridors and waiting rooms where you cross and where you stay. These are not museum or gallery environments, but places of everyday life, where art can unexpectedly be encountered and offer space for welfare, meditation, contemplation, and spirituality.
Locations and works
The connecting idea underlying all four projects is to reinterpret the nature of the microscopic entities that help us lead our macroscopic physical lives. My work intends to explore the realm of what is tangible and intangible as part of the same unifying reality, to create environments of
mindfulness and experience.
I was inspired by electronic microscope captures of brain fibers and nerve cells, de-contextualized from their natural habitat, visually reinterpreted, and placed in a dialogue with the hospital architecture and environments.

Below and Above
Ceiling and floor:
The Sky and the Earth.
One mirrors the Other,
In between everything happens.
Nerves and synapses,
The root and the branches.
The means and the limits
connect and divide.
The installation Below and Above has been conceived specifically for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine building. It addresses the architectural space and function of the Van Etten lobby, where two different groups of regular visitors are lead respectively to the RFK Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center at one end and the research laboratories at the other.
In my vision, this austere, anonymous and slightly intimidating lobby is transformed in a surprising place of wonder and experience.
The inspiring idea is to establish a dialogue between microscopic captures of brain fibres and synapses, and the macroscopic nature of the granite floor, whose shiny doubled surface is reflected in the ceiling above. The former recalls the organic forms of trees whose branches envelop the hall forest of columns and the light filtering through the windows.
Below and Above connects the floor to the ceiling and the inside to the outside in a regenerated transitional space, where the in-between area becomes a new place of experience. It offers welfare, meditation and spirituality for the individuals who attend it in their everyday life.
