ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Public Island is a public artwork conceived for different locations on Roosevelt Island. Designed to offer a new perception of everyday urban spaces, these site-specific installations stimulate a different vision of places that are ordinarily experienced only for their functional purposes.
I’ve sought my inspiration from the reality of the locations that have particularly attracted my attention and envisioned a transformative experience of their spaces. The origins of my ideas stem from the belief that art ought to be wherever life leads us, where we happen to be because of the circumstances, choices and occurrences of our daily wanderings.
Tramway
The inspiration for this seemingly abstract image is the extrusion of the majestic bridge structure above the station. Exploded into minimal visual components, it interacts with the daily street life and rhythmic movement of the people and cable cars moving in and out of the station.
Subway
Inspired by the tubular steel structure of the building, these perspective images act as a visual threshold that interacts with life inside and outside the station at day and night time.
Motorgate
It depicts a symmetrical double vision of Queensboro Bridge seen from below, creating a visionary architecture that stretches from the ground floor of the building to the heights of the sky.
Octagon
This image represents a ground floor view of the spiral staircases and floor level seen from the top of the building. It creates the illusion of a mirrored space and dynamically interacts with the interior architecture when viewed from the reception level looking up.
