The Tree of Time

Permanent environmental installation designed for the CSAC, Centro Studi e Archivio della Comunicazione, Sculpture Garden.

This work consists of an acoustic and luminous wind sculpture immersed in the greenery of the Sculpture Garden, inspired by the tradition of the ancient Cistercian Abbey and the collection of the Study Center and Communication Archive of the University of Parma.

At the intersection of art, nature, and architecture, this highly technological and poetic sculpture evokes the ancient presence of the Cistercian monks and their daily practice of work, prayer, and meditation, connecting two places rich in historical memory and functional use: the body of the building where the monastic cells once stood, now transformed into a guesthouse, and the Monks’ Garden currently under construction at the centre of the garden. The Tree of Time will provide this space for work, study and contemplation with energy for night-time lighting, sound and power to connect electronic devices at the central benches.

The techniques employed in the production of the artwork are dual in nature and complementary to each other: one is material, through the wind turbine constructed of special steel, the structural carbon fibres of the helical sails, and the advanced technology and energy-saving components; the other immaterial, through the use of wind energy, sound diffusion from the ground, light irradiation from the tree roots directed towards the rotating branches, and modulation of specially produced sound and light signals.

The project is based on the principles of environmental sustainability, the use of green technology for the production of renewable energy, respect for biodiversity, non-invasiveness of the natural environment and wildlife, and a harmonious relationship with the cycle of day and night.

This work will be available for viewing during visits to the Museum, exhibitions, and Archives, becoming an integral part of the Collection and reflecting on the relationship between the ancient architectural space and the interaction between traditional and contemporary languages. It aims to stimulate the public’s meditative and participatory relationship with the natural environment and works of art immersed in a place of historical and cultural interest, exploring the delicate balance between man, technology, and the environment.

Installazione ambientale permanente ideata per il Giardino delle Sculture dello CSAC, Centro Studi e Archivio della Comunicazione

L’opera consiste in una scultura eolica, acustica e luminosa immersa nel verde del Giardino delle Sculture, ispirata alla tradizione dell’antica Abbazia Cistercense e alla collezione del Centro Studi e Archivio della Comunicazione dell’Università di Parma.

All’intersezione tra Arte, Natura e Architettura, questa scultura ad alto contenuto tecnologico e poetico evoca l’antica presenza dei monaci Cistercensi e la pratica quotidiana del lavoro, preghiera e meditazione, ponendo in relazione due luoghi ricchi di memoria storica e funzione d’uso: il corpo di fabbrica dell’edificio nel quale sorgevano le celle monastiche, oggi trasformato in foresteria, e l’edificando Orto dei Monaci al centro del giardino. L’Albero del Tempo fornirà a questo spazio di lavoro, studio e contemplazione l’energia per l’illuminazione notturna, l’alimentazione sonora e l’energia per collegare i dispositivi elettronici presso le panchine centrali.

Le tecniche utilizzate per la realizzazione dell’opera hanno una doppia natura e sono complementari tra loro:

–  l’una materiale, attraverso l’aero-generatore costruito in acciaio speciale, le fibre di carbonio strutturale delle vele elicoidali e la componentistica a tecnologia avanzata e risparmio energetico;

–  l’altra immateriale, mediante l’utilizzo di energia eolica, diffusione sonora dal terreno, irradiazione luminosa dalle radici dell’albero orientata verso i rami rotanti, e modulazione dei segnali sonori e luminosi appositamente prodotti.

L’intervento di basa sui principi di sostenibilità ambientale, utilizzo di tecnologia verde per la produzione di energia rinnovabile, rispetto della bio-diversità, non invasività dell’ambiente naturale e faunistico, e rapporto armonico con la ciclicità del giorno e della notte.

L’opera sarà fruibile durante la visita al Museo, alle mostre e all’Archivio diventando parte integrante della Collezione, per riflettere sul rapporto tra l’antico spazio architettonico e l’interazione dei linguaggi della tradizione e della contemporaneità. Essa intende stimolare il rapporto meditativo e partecipe del pubblico con l’ambiente naturale e le opere d’arte immerse in un luogo di grande interesse storico e culturale, esplorando il delicato equilibrio tra uomo, tecnologia e ambiente.
