PAC opens its new season with the exhibition ‘SILVIO WOLF. On the Threshold’, curated by Giorgio Verzotti, which will run from 7 October to 6 November. Supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Milan and produced by PAC, this first solo exhibition of the work of Silvio Wolf in a public space in Italy, conceived exclusively for the Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, is also one of the events organized for the 7th Giornata del Contemporaneo / Contemporary Art Day, Saturday 8 October 2011, organized by AMACI (the Italian Association of Contemporary Art Museums), of which PAC is a founding member.

The exhibition explores thirty years of artistic activity, in seven different sections. In the itinerary designed by Silvio Wolf the visitor is placed at the center of a visual and sensory experience: environmental installations, photographic works and video projections are conceived as stages of a journey that engages the viewer from the outset, moving through timeless images in which light is the primary feature, the expressive fulcrum of work that amplifies perception and sensory stimuli, immersing the viewer in a situation the artist calls “listening”.

The first section presents Light Wave, created for the 53^rd Venice Biennale: the impressive abstract  writing of light displayed on the threshold of the exhibition itinerary marks the sensory aspect of the show and introduces the visitor to the coming stages of the journey.

The next three rooms are devoted to cycles of photographic works: Soglie/Thresholds (symbolic images of architecture), Orizzonti/Horizons (abstractions in the language of photography) and Icone di Luce/Icons of Light (apparition and disappearance of the object-image): they deal with the principal themes explored by the artist in the photographic medium.

Through these cycles Silvio Wolf examines, in different ways, the threshold relationship between visible reality, surface and subject. The still image in these four sections interacts with the fluid images of the video projections in the fifth room, which subjectively explore public spaces with strong symbolic connotations, and with the two large, evocative site-specific installations on the ground level and in the upper gallery.

The environmental works use radiating light, sound, photography and reflecting surfaces to actively involve the viewer in the architectural space. The nature of these works and the particular way they are set up encourage visitors to remain in quiet contemplation, but also to consciously interact with spaces conceived as active zones of experience.

To complete the itinerary, in collaboration with the contralto Cinzia Bauci and the musician Pier Gallesi the artist has created the performance La Via del Cuore/The Way of the Heart, which will be presented live to journalists at the end of the press conference and performed on the evenings of the opening and Contemporary Art Day. The sound recording of the performance will also be played back as part of the show. Conceived as a true work within the work, it offers an acoustic and performance-based interpretation of the large glass wall installation on the ground level, whose ten back-lit sections symbolically follow, in ten stations, the actions of bodies, the human voice and the mystical sound of the Shofar, the ancient musical instrument of the Hebrew tradition.

Il PAC apre la nuova stagione espositiva con la mostra SILVIO WOLF. Sulla Soglia, a cura di Giorgio Ver- zotti, in programma dal 7 ottobre al 6 novembre. Promossa dall’Assessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Milano e prodotta dal PAC, la prima mostra personale in uno spazio pubblico italiano di Silvio Wolf, rea- lizzata in esclusiva per il Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, fa parte delle iniziative organizzate in occa- sione della 7a Giornata del Contemporaneo, indetta per sabato 8 ottobre 2011 da AMACI Associazione dei Musei d’Arte Contemporanea Italiana, di cui il PAC è socio fondatore. 

Sette distinte sezioni espositive presentano la sintesi di trent’anni di attività artistica. Silvio Wolf ha pro- gettato un percorso che pone il visitatore al centro di un’esperienza visiva e sensoriale: installazioni am- bientali, opere fotografiche e videoproiezioni sono pensate come stazioni di un viaggio che sin dall’ingresso coinvolge il pubblico attraverso immagini senza tempo, nelle quali la luce è l’elemento primario, espres- sione di un’arte che amplifica la percezione e gli stimoli sensoriali, ponendo il pubblico in una condizione che l’artista definisce “di ascolto”. 

La prima sezione presenta Light Wave, l’opera realizzata per la 53a Biennale di Venezia: la grandiosa scrittura di luce posta sulla soglia del percorso espositivo sigla la dimensione sensoriale della mostra e introduce alle successive stazioni di questo viaggio. Nelle tre sale seguenti si susseguono i cicli di opere fotografiche: Soglie (immagini simboliche di archi- tetture), Orizzonti (astrazioni del linguaggio fotografico) e Icone di Luce (apparizione e scomparsa del- l’oggetto-immagine), che affrontano le principali tematiche dell’artista nel medium fotografico. Attraverso questi cicli di opere Silvio Wolf esamina con modalità differenti il rapporto di soglia fra reale vi- sibile, superficie e soggetto. L’immagine fissa di queste quattro sezioni interagisce con quella fluida delle video-proiezioni, che nella quinta sala esplorano in soggettiva spazi pubblici dalla forte connotazione sim- bolica, e con le suggestioni delle due grandi installazioni site-specific per il parterre al piano terra e la gal- leria al primo piano. 

Le opere ambientali, attraverso l’uso d’irradiazione luminosa, suono, fotografia e superfici specchianti, coinvolgono attivamente lo spettatore all’interno dello spazio architettonico. La loro natura e il loro parti- colare allestimento richiedono al visitatore ora una posizione immobile e contemplativa, ora d’essere con- sapevolmente presente in spazi pensati come luoghi attivi di esperienza. 

A compimento dell’intero percorso espositivo l’artista ha progettato, in collaborazione con Cinzia Bauci, con- tralto, e Pier Gallesi, musicista, la performance La Via del Cuore, che sarà presentata dal vivo ai giornalisti al termine della conferenza stampa, le sere dell’inaugurazione e della Giornata del Contemporaneo. La perfor- mance sarà successivamente riproposta in forma di registrazione sonora nel corso della mostra. Nata come vera e propria opera nell’opera, essa interpreta acusticamente e performativamente la grande opera-vetrata del parterre, le cui dieci sezioni retro-illuminate accolgono simbolicamente lungo altrettante stazioni l’azione dei corpi, la voce umana e il mistico suono dello Shofar, l’antico strumento musicale della tradizione ebraica. 

Silvio Wolf (Milano, 1952), Visiting Professor alla School of Visual Arts di New York e docente all’Istituto Europeo di Design di Milano, realizza opere fotografiche, installazioni e interventi ambientali utilizzando il video, la luce, la proiezione e il suono. Ha esposto in musei, spazi pubblici e gallerie in diversi paesi oltre all’Italia, tra i quali Belgio, Canada, Ger- mania, Inghilterra, Lussemburgo, Spagna e Stati Uniti. Ha partecipato a Documenta VIII a Kassel e alla 53a Biennale di Venezia.
